Cañon City is located in easter Fremont County at the foot of the Rocky Mountains. Centrally located in the state, it’s easy to access no matter which way you’re going!
Cañon City sits alongside the Arkansas River which is known for its great whitewater rafting, fishing, and kayaking. With a nice elevation of 5,332 feet above sea level, it’s a pleasant attitude. Known as the “Climate Captial of Colorado”, the mountains surrounding Cañon City help protect from the harsh weather conditions and provide for lots of days of sunshine. It’s common to watch a storm coming and see the clouds part around the city!
The Cañon City Historic Downtown District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It’s quaint downtown shops and restaurants create a feel of going back in time. We have numerous parks throughout the city and many craft shows and entertainment events are primarily held at Veteran’s Park (located on the west side of Cañon City on Highway 50) and Centennial Park (or also known as Duck Park) off of 4th Street. Other local events include the Canon City Music & Blossom Festival and Carnival, Antique Car Show, 1st Fridays, and the Royal Gorge Whitewater Festival.
Cañon City is also home to the Cañon City Tigers and has exceptional schools and staff! (I am partial to the school district because I am married to a teacher!) Some of the local schools include Washington Elementary, McKinley Elementary, Harrison School, Cañon City Middle School, and the Canon City High School to name a few. We also have the Pueblo Community College Fremont Campus which is located on the furthest western side of the city on Highway 50.

Our largest employers consist of the Department of Corrections, Centura Health, and Cañon City Schools.
Cañon City is a great tourist destination for having the Royal Gorge Bridge and Park, Royal Gorge Route Railroad, The Abbey Winery, Jeep Tours, Red Canyon Park, Museum of Colorado Prisons, Dinosaur Experience, and many rafting outfitters and restaurants.

View of the Arkansas River from the River Walk Trail
There are many groups available for hiking, biking, and other indoor and outdoor activities for the hobbyists. The Arkansas River Trail follows the river from one side of town to the other for great walks and bike riding with many exercise stops and park benches along the way. The Cañon City Recreational District provides a public swimming pool, archery range, ropes course, and a community room as well as softball, kickball, soccer, and all types of other sports for kids and adults! We have 2 very nice tennis courts (located in Rudd Park and Centennial Park) along with a new pickleball court at Rouse Park!
Whether you’re like me and like to bicycle downhill — or like to back over and across the mountains — there is something here for everyone!
